Gettin' Coney

Alex and I decided to take a beach day to get some color and girl talk in. We wanted to go out to Fire Island or Fort Tilden, but Coney Island is about a 20 minute subway ride away and much more convenient (and free), so on we went. :)

Yucky, yucky, yucky! I'm so white! My color completed faded.

My Weekend in Michigan ♥

For the past 5 days, I have been in Michigan spending time with the people that mean the most to me. After 7 weeks of not seeing Adam, my parents, and the rest of my family, I decided to spend the money to head on out there. :)

What I've Learned in NYC in 1 Week

Yes, I am finally in New York! We just settled in to our lovely apartment in Brooklyn, and I started my internship on Monday. I'll only be working Tuesday through Thursdays, so that leaves me some time to blog for BeYOUty Queen! :)

By the way, GO FOLLOW MY OTHER BLOG! It's a blog on the world's top 50 women models, a little bit about them, where you may have seen them, and how to get a look of theirs from the street, an editorial, or cover! I'm going to be doing them hopefully once a day, so please check it out and follow it!

Anyways, onto the purpose of this blog. The things I have learned in just one week of living in the city. I've obviously learned more things, but these are the good ones. :)

  • There is no such thing as "pitch black." Even when it's 1am and you're in bed with the doors shut and blinds down.
  • Even outside of the city, if you expect a quiet life, dream on.
  • If you just act like you know what you're doing and where you're going, others will think you do.
  • Walk straight, look forward, and act like you don't even speak English (or whatever language they're speaking) when a man says "Hey baby, *kiss kiss*" or in one case of mine "Ooh, bonita, bonita."
  • If you're not reading a book, doing a crossword or sudoku puzzle, or jamming to an iPod you are totally screwed and an outcast on the subway.
  • Sometimes, you have to do what's best for you and ignore those who will be upset with you.
  • Especially in the PR world, research is a must. This has been shoved down my throat since I started my PR classes, but it is becoming more and more relevant.
  • The people here really aren't that bad. In fact, I've come across some really nice and helpful people so far.
  • Despite what I've seen in movies, there is no cell phone service underground. Duh, Sam. Duh.
  • Pigeons are probably the ugliest, stupidest, most annoying creatures to ever exist. Especially when they roost in the roof right next to your upstairs bedroom.
  • I have fantastic parents and in-laws.
  • Public restrooms are extremely hard to find.
  • Kosher food is when they separate dairy from meat. And Kosher ice cream is THE BOMB.
  • You can't always trust the pretzels from the street vendors to be fresh.
  • This is a fantastic place to live.

Bucket List for NYC

Summer 2011 will be one I will surely never forget. I'm spending 3 fun-filled months with 3 awesome roommates and I'm sure we'll have the time of our life! :)

Here are my things to get done while I'm spending my time in the Concrete Jungle:

  • Go to a Yankee's game & become a Yankee's fan!
  • Visit at least 1 show on Broadway or see the New York City Ballet
  • Go to MTV's The Seven
  • Run a marathon with Alex
  • Drink little to no pop (err, soda in NYC talk?!) and stick to juice & water
  • Meet (or at least get within a 5 feet radius of) somebody famous and get a picture
  • Shop at DASH
  • Have the best 20th birthday EVER
  • Possibly join a co-ed volleyball team?
  • Visit Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken
  • Figure out the legendary, unanswered question: Where is the best place to get pizza in NYC?
  • Try Sushi
  • Go to a zoo
  • Master the subway system
  • Lay out one day at Central Park
  • Read "If You Have To Cry, Go Outside" by Kelly Cutrone from cover to cover
  • Plan some really sweet events for Model Lounge, and do some great PR & marketing stuff, too!
  • Go to Kleinfeld's for Alex!
  • Go to the Jersey Shore for the day
  • Buy a fake Louis bag that looks semi real, because I can't afford the $1,700 one I want. :(
  • See a movie set in action
  • Get my picture with Spider-Man again
  • Go to the Mermaid Parade in Brooklyn
  • See the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks
  • Try to find a good church so we can start going on Sundays :)
More to come, probably. But for now this will do! If you guys were going to NYC, what would you want to do? I've already visited the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center and stuff like that.

Dying for that dream internship?!

Hey guys! Good news - after being on Intern Queen and doing a blog post, I was not only asked by 1, but 2 other websites to be a guest blogger. The one below is the one submitted to Internships.com - another good source for finding internships. It's a post on what I did to find my internship, and I truly believe it worked. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Most of us want to go far in life and a big measure of how far we go is where we end up in our career. A big start in defining yourself in your career is of course by finding an internship. But many of us aren’t in the search for an internship; we’re looking for the internship – the internship that is going to lead us right into the direction we want it to.
But how do you come about getting that internship?
  • ·         Get your resume ready. This is a little obvious, but you can’t stress it enough. Be sure your resume is in tip-top condition. This means no spelling or grammatical errors (spell check AND proof read), appealing to the eye (bold important terms and titles and use some color), and is in the correct format. Be sure to go to your Career Services department at your school for a professional to look it over and give you ways to improve it.
  • ·       Don’t slack on your cover letters. Yes, we all know how easy it is to create one basic cover letter to send out to everyone. However, your employers will be able to tell if it’s generic and will file your entire application into their trash folder. Therefore, just don’t do it. Write a cover letter as if you are talking to the CEO of that company in person. Explain to them how you found out about the company/internship, tell them about yourself and what you are trying to pursue, discuss your strengths and how you can help benefit the company in the department you are applying for, then discuss any last words. I worked at a used car dealership then had an internship with the North American International Auto Show, but I was trying to pursue a Fashion internship. I said to my employers “I know by looking at my resume, you can see that I have experience in the auto industry, but I can assure you that I have a passion and eye for the Fashion and Beauty industries. I invite you to check out my fashion/beauty blog to see for yourself.” I also thanked them for their time and consideration, and told them I looked forward to hearing back from them. One more thing with your cover letters: be sure to put them in the body of your e-mail. Some employers may not be compatible with different kinds of software, so it would be better to make it available right on the spot. It also avoids a ton of navigation and possibly time if they have a slow computer.
  • ·         Apply, apply, apply. During the search for my summer internship, I thought it would only take me a few applications to hear back from something – boy, was I sadly mistaken. I applied for 5, heard nothing. Applied for 10, heard nothing. Applied for 20, heard nothing. I was in doubt that I would never find an internship, especially in New York City, where the Fashion industry is main stream and would be the best place for me to find a Fashion PR internship. But after hearing from Alex who already had 2 interviews lined up for a summer internship to just keep applying, I did. After about 25 or 30 e-mails to different companies all over the country, I finally got an interview with one of them, which eventually landed to a PR/marketing/event planning internship in the heart of Manhattan, New York.
I believe by doing the things listed above, it is possible for you to land any internship you want. Just be sure to be yourself, and don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back right away. Big companies receive applications from interns every day – you just have to show them why you stand out and why you are the best candidate for them!
