What I've Learned in NYC in 1 Week

Yes, I am finally in New York! We just settled in to our lovely apartment in Brooklyn, and I started my internship on Monday. I'll only be working Tuesday through Thursdays, so that leaves me some time to blog for BeYOUty Queen! :)

By the way, GO FOLLOW MY OTHER BLOG! It's a blog on the world's top 50 women models, a little bit about them, where you may have seen them, and how to get a look of theirs from the street, an editorial, or cover! I'm going to be doing them hopefully once a day, so please check it out and follow it!

Anyways, onto the purpose of this blog. The things I have learned in just one week of living in the city. I've obviously learned more things, but these are the good ones. :)

  • There is no such thing as "pitch black." Even when it's 1am and you're in bed with the doors shut and blinds down.
  • Even outside of the city, if you expect a quiet life, dream on.
  • If you just act like you know what you're doing and where you're going, others will think you do.
  • Walk straight, look forward, and act like you don't even speak English (or whatever language they're speaking) when a man says "Hey baby, *kiss kiss*" or in one case of mine "Ooh, bonita, bonita."
  • If you're not reading a book, doing a crossword or sudoku puzzle, or jamming to an iPod you are totally screwed and an outcast on the subway.
  • Sometimes, you have to do what's best for you and ignore those who will be upset with you.
  • Especially in the PR world, research is a must. This has been shoved down my throat since I started my PR classes, but it is becoming more and more relevant.
  • The people here really aren't that bad. In fact, I've come across some really nice and helpful people so far.
  • Despite what I've seen in movies, there is no cell phone service underground. Duh, Sam. Duh.
  • Pigeons are probably the ugliest, stupidest, most annoying creatures to ever exist. Especially when they roost in the roof right next to your upstairs bedroom.
  • I have fantastic parents and in-laws.
  • Public restrooms are extremely hard to find.
  • Kosher food is when they separate dairy from meat. And Kosher ice cream is THE BOMB.
  • You can't always trust the pretzels from the street vendors to be fresh.
  • This is a fantastic place to live.

Trends to Try This Spring!

This is a guest blog I wrote for AskEachOther.com! Enjoy!

      1. Different prints of tights with skirts and shorts. There are so many different kinds of tights out there! They have animal print, normal black sheer, different colors of lace, polka dots, flowers, and so many more! With a pair of shorts or a skirt or dress, it can really spice up a boring look and show off your personality. You can find tights at tons of stores including Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, and even Target, JC Penny, and K Mart!
      2. Wearing a satchel or cross-body bag.  Yes, it is true that Indiana Jones has one. That’s just one reason he was so awesome. Satchels and cross-body bags are perfect for ladies on the go since you don’t have to worry about balancing your bag on your shoulder as you shop or go anywhere. And we all know that it can be a huge pain in the butt trying to get stuff out of a bag stuck on your shoulder. A cross-body bag allows both of your hands to scrounge through to get what you need! Again, there are a million different bags to try. They’re available everywhere. I’ve seen a lot of cute ones for low prices at Target.

3. Try something new with your hair like braids, au naturel, and extreme parts. Low ponytails and buns were really popular on the runway, so why not spunk them up with braids? Whether it’s a single braid in a pony tail, or turning one big braid into a low bun, simple is in. This also includes your natural, messy, wavy locks. After a shower, just put a 1-1 ½ drops of defrizzing serum into your hair, then just let it do what it wants, or diffuse it until it’s how you want it. But if you’re not into your hair’s natural tendencies, try styling it with an extreme side part for an edgier and newer look. A new part will also add some volume to your roots.

Whether you’re trying a trend off the runway or finding your own inspiration, just remember one thing: Don’t forget to flaunt it! Whether you feel like you are or not, you are a super model, and whether you’re a size 3 or size 30, you’re 16 or 36, you’re short or tall: Style is suitable for everybody.

I'm published, baby!

All of this hard work I've been doing is paying off so well. Not only have I been on Intern Queen as a Campus Ambassador, but I just got posted on Internships.com on how I got my NYC internship! You can read it here. :)

I'm also going to start blogging for AskEachOther.com, a social networking site of a monthly audience of over 2 million 18-30 year olds, with advice and opinions on Sports, Dating, Tech, and Pink - fashion and beauty! If it all starts expanding, they may even start paying me for it. What would be better than blogging about things you love and getting paid to do it? ... #cricketnoise Nothing!

By the way, I'm currently in the process of creating a whole new template and layout for easier navigation and a better appearance in general. Be on the look out for that, along with more reviews, OOTDs, prom makeup, etc. coming soon. I'm still busy with a ton of stuff, including starting up a Fashion RSO on campus! The blogger meet up we went to a couple months ago has really gotten us inspired.

I will talk to you all soon. Have a lovely week. xoxo

Re-Cap of #InternChat, 3/15

Tonight, the Intern Queen herself, Lauren Berger, hosted a Twitter chat of some common Intern questions. In case you missed, here is a re-cap.

1. How do you feel about students blogging in college?
Blogging is absolutely necessary for those in PR, marketing, communications, writing, etc. It's absolutely HUGE.

2. If you were to list one thing that would really impress you as an internship coordinator, what would it be?
A good cover letter. Be sure that it is personal and not just a generic one that you send to everyone.

3. I want to start a blog. What do I blog about?
Blog about your passions, just don't turn it into a diary. If you blog about random things, you'll lose interest and things to talk about. If it's something you truly love and are driven for, you'll continue to grow with it. Also, be sure that it is professional. You never know who may view your blog! (I actually posted a blog a couple of weeks ago about Versa Manos, President of GORGEOUS PR. She read it and e-mailed me about it!)

4. Know of any great sites for business cards? Is it appropriate to have them as a recent grad?
VistaPrint was a huge one mentioned. Business cards are becoming more and more frequent again for both students and recent grads. Be sure to ask your employer if they want one, don't just throw it at them.

5. Back to blogging. I have a blog - how do I get it out there and get people to read it?
Follow others and comment on others' posts with similar interests. Be sure it's a meaningful comment though. Don't spam people by promoting your site/blog - nobody likes that.

6. Other than @, what are some quality internship sites?
Be sure to check out your campus career center - that should be the first place you go! They help build relationships for you and direct you into good places.  Also be sure to check this article out for links to the top 5 communities for your internship search! Lauren also said "don't just talk about internships - LAND THEM. Make things happen!" YouTern.com was another one mentioned in the chat!
